Over ninety percent of speaking courses are built upon the false assumption that emotional motivation is key…this is hold over from the flawed thinking of B.F. Skinners Behaviorism theory. Skinner believed that humans were motivated only by external stimuli. His theories have been proven false for over forty years but people still accept the myth as true.
What is the truth?
Human beings are rational and SELF-motivated. While you can excite people temporarily with fiery rhetoric the effect only lasts for a few days at best and they return to their old ways and habits. This is why “motivational speakers” sell tapes, CD, books, DVD’s, etc for you to listen to everyday — because the effect wears off. It is pure emotion.

People want to learn, they want tools to use, they enjoy being able to control their lives and their work–what people want is knowledge. People enjoy clear and effective information they can use over hours of emotional hoopla.
